New solutions at Österdalsbruket in Norway

Moelven Österdalsbruket invested in a complete dry sorting plant from Renholmen in the late 1980s. It is still in full operation but has now been modernised. Österdalsbruket has also recently updated its sticker stacker.

Last autumn, the dry sorting line from the 1980s was upgraded with a new control system, as the old one could no longer be maintained due to age. In consultation with Renholmen, Österdalsbruket also took the opportunity to install a large number of frequency converters so that the drives can be controlled in a more rational way.

“We also added machine guards, light beams, nets and gates for a safer working environment”, says Hans Eriksson.

“The dry sorting plant was installed in 1988 and safety standards have changed quite a bit over the years, so it was high time to update it”, says Stein Eriksen, operations manager at Moelven Österdalsbruket.

Efficient electric drives
In the late summer of 2025, Österdalsbruket continued to upgrade its timber handling, this time with a sticker stacker. The dry sorter and sticker stacker were supplied by Renholmen in the mid-1990s and were very modern at the time.

“Now they needed updating. The stacker was fitted with new efficient electric drives for the stacking frame and finger carriage. The litter portion feeder was rebuilt and a new stick step feeder for the litter intake was installed”, says Hans Eriksson.

Improved accessibility
“We have made a lot of investments in the sawmill in recent years which have increased the speed of production, but the timber handling has not really kept up and has become a bottleneck. With the upgrade to the stacker, we aim to improve accessibility”, says Stein Eriksen.

Moelven has made all the updates to the timber handling in close consultation with Renholmen.

Hans Eriksson, Sales

“We have a very good relationship. Hans Eriksson at Renholmen knows what we need and offers lots of good advice”, says Stein Eriksen.

“At Österdalsbruket, we promised to maintain 50 per cent of the saw’s capacity in the first day of operation after the renovation, but we hit 100 per cent right away, and that was naturally very pleasing”, says Hans Eriksson.
